Many children struggle to keep up in school, but tutoring can provide help catered to the unique needs of each child. It boosts students’ study habits, skills, and confidence. You may have considered hiring a tutor but found it too expensive. If so, Learn to Be might be a great fit: it offers free online tutoring for underserved families. You can find a tutor for every grade level and almost every subject.
- Learn to Be has served over 9,000 students, who have reported an average test score increase of 15.52% and GPA increase of 1.64.
- The tutors are volunteers and are high school students, college students, or professionals.
- A tutor will select your child based on your child’s needs and goals. They will meet once or twice each week on Zoom or another online platform.
- The tutors don’t use a specific curriculum, so they can help your child with test prep, reading, math, or anything else.
- If your child needs help in more than one subject, you can even connect with multiple tutors!
It’s important to note that the tutors don’t undergo specific training and might not have teaching experience. They are screened by creating a video to explain their values and their motivation for tutoring. Tutors over age 18 have to pass a background check, but you should always monitor your child’s tutoring sessions to make sure you feel comfortable with the tutor. If you are unhappy with your tutor for any reason, you can connect with a different one instead.
To apply for Learn to Be tutoring, you will need to provide your child’s personal information and tutoring needs. Learn to Be also asks for monthly financial contributions from those who can afford it, but no one has to pay for the tutoring. Within a few days, your child should be connected with a tutor!
If Learn to Be isn’t a fit for your child, here are some other ways to get free tutoring:
- TutorBridge offers free online tutoring for K-12 students. It pairs students with volunteer tutors under age 25. This organization mainly offers math or reading tutoring, but if your tutor is willing, she or he can help with other subjects as well.
- Schoolhouse World provides free online group sessions where students 13+ can work with peer tutors. Tutors get certified to teach a subject by completing Khan Academy assessments. Then they offer SAT bootcamps, writing workshops, math instruction, etc. Students can also message tutors with questions.
- Your child’s school may offer free tutoring or homework help sessions. If not, you might be able to get help from another local school.
- Many public libraries offer free tutoring and other educational resources.
As you can see, tutoring isn’t always expensive! No matter your financial situation, your child can have personalized help to thrive in school.
